Hypertrophic Scarring & Piercings [Nov. 5th, 2007|01:18 am]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
Two types of scars are the result of the body overproducing collagen. This can cause scarring to be raised above the surrounding skin. Hypertrophic scars take the form of a red raised lump on the skin, but do not grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound, and often improve in appearance after a few years. Keloid scars are a more serious form of scarring, because they can carry on growing indefinitely into a large, tumorous (though usually benign) growth. Keloids should not be confused with hypertrophic scars, which may be reduced over time.

Healing
Hypertrophic scars also tend to heal themselves, decreasing in size and irritability over time, usually a 12-18 month period. The scars will not disappear entirely, however. If the scar continues to grow removing the jewelry and allowing the piercing to close is often the only remedy.

• Vitamin E - Some suggest that using creams containing Vitamin E can help speed up the healing process, and lessen the appearance of any scar afterwards. Other research, however, suggests that applying Vitamin E to post surgical scars does not reduce the size, shape, or color of scars and can, in up to one third of patients, result in contact dermatitis, allergic reactions, or other irritation that can worsen a scar's appearance.

• Tea Tree Oil - Tea tree oil can be used, although sparingly, as tea tree oil is very drying and can damage the unscarred skin and jeopardize your piercing. This is not recommended for use on new and/or healing piercings.

• Sea Salt Soaks -
-Wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial or antimicrobial soap.
-Place about a pinch of non-iodized sea salt in a small disposable cup or a clean shotglass.
-Add hot water (has to be hot, but not so hot that you'd burn yourself) to the cup. Fill the cup about 1/2 to 3/4 full.
-Soak the area for about 5-10 minutes.
-Rinse thoroughly with water and pat dry with unused/clean towel (used towels carry TONS of bacteria)... or air dry.

• Chamomile Compress - Take a chamomile tea bag and dip it in boiling water. Immediately take the bag out and use as a compress upon the scarring, for 15 minutes. If you do this 2-3 times per day for 3-4 days, the scarring should go down. This does not work for everyone or on all piercings, but many people who have used it on cartilage piercings have reported positive results.

• Cortisone - OTC hydrocortisone ointments and creams containing from 0.5% to 1% cortisone can sometimes be used to shrink scar tissue.

I freaked out when that happened to my first nose piercing. But then it mysteriously went away without me doing anything to it so I didn't bother being worried when it happened to my second one, though it was annoyingly unattractive. xD

I just came across this journal randomly, and this is really helpful! I got my tragus pierced about 9 months ago and it looks like the first picture. Thanks for the helpful advice! The scarring disappeared once before but comes back, with a vengeance, whenever I accidentally hit the ear with my phone or whatever. thanks again!

My scars always become Kelloid things so I have injections to fix them, they feel all plastic-y and gross!

i'm surprised it happened to your piercing . . . not that i know too much about piercings, i guess, but i've only really seen that kind of scarring in cartilage piercings. hmmm. but, as you said, you know what it is and how to get rid of it . .. so, you're winning this battle.

Very informative!

I had this happen to my ear tips and no matter what I did they kept getting infected again. I finally took them out eleven months ago, they are smaller, but can still be seen.

If they go away completely I would really like to try again with the peircing, what do you think are the chances of rejection again? The first time I had taken leave of my senses, I let someone I knew do them instead of going to a shop. Even after I changed to surgical steel hoops the swelling did not stay down.

I know this thread is way old but I was googling around for some answers. I'm not sure if this is scarring or a keloid. It don't think it's gotten bigger. At one point it was there then *poof* got tiny and then it go bigger again. I know I've knocked it around so scarring isn't out of the question. But I'm looking for experienced opinions so I know how to make it better.

Randomly came across this while 'doing a google'.
With calmomile tea soaks does it have to be the plain ones? The ones i have in my cuboard are calmomile, honey and vanilla.. i should get new ones right?
I either have a boil or a hypertrophic scars and so far salt soaks made it nearly go away but now its come back again and it looks kind of squishy like a spot and feels tender :(

Is that really you? Wow, could you please tell me how you dyed your hair? I would be incredibly grateful, you have no idea how many years I've been trying to get my hair that EXACT shade of light blue. This was all pretty useful by the way.

Just came across this using google, but it has been incredibly helpful. Thank you for the post ^.^ I have a small bump, just like the one in the last picture near a cartilage piercing, and I was glad to find an answer here. Thanks!

You don't know me, but THANK YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I have this on my three helix piercings (yeah, I had all three done at once. I'm so freaking stupid x_X) and I was wondering why my skin was trying to gnom my earrings. Cue major freaking out etc

I'm going on down to the piercists anyway for him to have a look and see how the ear is taking the abuse, but thank you so much for the reassurance!
